If you are one of the many people who wear glasses or contact then you have probably wondered about laser eye surgery. I myself am one of those people. 15 years is a long time to have to put contacts in, and I’m just about to the point that I cant stand having to rely on them day in and day out. Most people are not sure if the cost is covered by their insurance. The normal answer to this question is no. Laser eye surgery is not covered by most insurance because it is considered to be a cosmetic surgery. There is no insurance agency that you can find that will cover a cosmetic procedure unless it is due to a severe accident and the surgery is required to repair areas of the skin that were lost or destroyed. So, since having laser eye surgery does not fall into this category, no one that elects to get the surgery will be able to file a claim in order to get it paid for. So how can afford to do this procedure if you are on a fixed income or a budget? There are actually quite a few ways that this surgery can be either completely or partially paid for.
Call around to some places that perform laser eye surgery in your area and see if one of those clinics is willing to set up a payment plan. the average cost of laser eye surgery is twenty five hundred dollars per eye. This amount could be higher or lower, just depending on the surgeon, and if they have any discounts or specials at the time, so this price is not definite. In most cases you can do this if you have good credit. They will normally need at least half the cost of the procedure upfront as a deposit before you have the laser eye surgery. After you have the surgery you will need to make monthly payments until the surgery is paid in full. many people use this method because they can get their surgery done without having to pay the full cost up front.
Here is another thing that you can consider, is to use your tax benefit. Any time that someone has had a surgery or medical bills that they have paid, they can use the out of pocket that they spent on it to get a tax break in the united states. This tax credit will normally cover twenty percent of the full cost of the procedure that you can use for that years taxes. A little bit of extra money can help, everyone knows this. Twenty percent can add up to a good amount when the time comes around to file your return. you will have to make extra sure that you keep up with all the receipts for payments that you make so that if you are asked by your tax professional or the IRS they will be available at no costs to you. This will be the only proof that you will have if you were to get an audit or if they were to need to see them for some reason in the future.
Some people may take out a personal loan from their bank. If you have a good standing with your bank and good credit score, you may be able to get a personal loan to pay the upfront costs of having the laser eye surgery. Getting a loan from your bank instead of making payments to your surgeon could mean that you get a better interest rate on your money that you owe. You also wont have to give any money upfront to get your surgery since you would be using your loan. It is important that you have good credit when you apply for a loan that you intend to use for a medical procedure.
The way that most people don’t want to hear about or consider, is that you could save your money up. Each year when you have your appointment at your optometrist, and buy your contacts or glasses, match what you pay your eye doctor into a savings account. You could try to double it if you are able to. This will have you with enough money to pay for the surgery in 4-5 years. I know that seems like a huge long term goal, but it would be worth it, when it came time to have your appointment, but realize you have enough money saved to go have the entire surgery! No loans! This is what I am trying to do personally.
Now you have a few things you can consider when deciding on how you will fund your laser eye surgery. You can barrow or save, its up to you, either way, Good Luck!
