The Auburn Plainsman had an interesting post today that suggested eating at home is cheaper and healthier. I too agree with this statement but only because I’ve been actually paying attention this year to what I’ve been eating.
The article cited USA Today saying that 50% more calories are consumed when you eat out because of all the junk the restaurants put in their food. So that pretty much handles the “healthier-at-home” side of things.
But, what stuck out with me was where the article cited someone that makes enough of each serving at home so that there are leftovers. And, that’s where you save the most money by making your meals at home.
You might make your grand feast and spend $100 at the store. But, then if you break-up the leftovers into different bags and plates and freeze them, use some parts for sandwiches to take to work, leave others to nibble on as snacks, that can make a huge difference. Suddenly your initial outlay cost brings cuts your next 4 or 5 meals into $1 or $2 a piece.
The conclusion:
1. Cook at home more often…It will be healthier for you and your family.
2. Make your meals bigger than you and your family can finish.
3. Plan for meals that can be broken up into sub-meals with the leftovers.
And, you too will save money by making meals at home.
